"Ravi, astrology is like a vast ocean. If you want to learn to swim in it, you must first stand on the shore of fundamental principles..."
— This is the guidance a Guru gave when his student Ravi was overwhelmed looking at the books.
Introduction
We have discussed the benefits of astrology. Now I will explain what you need to learn in order to be able to predict astrological results.
What is Astrology?
Perceiving time — past, present, and future — is not possible for ordinary human beings. Only Rishis (sages), Munis (ascetics), and Maharshis (great sages) possess that ability.
We are fortunate beyond measure, because those Maharshis, through the power of their penance (Tapas), showed a path for even ordinary people to analyse the knowledge of time (Kaala) and karma through the positions of planets (Grahas).
When and How Can We Use Astrology?
Astrology describes a person's life through 12 houses (Bhavas). Results for every life situation can be predicted through astrology, but how we interpret them is very important.
For example, they say that if you pour water downward it flows to the lowest point. But in some situations it is hard to tell whether it will flow right or left. Astrology is similar — depending on context, one must interpret with greater depth.
Life Contexts
Regardless of the situation in life, we naturally receive results proportional to the effort we put in.
Good Fortune
Results 10 times greater than the effort put in.
Deserved Results
Receiving results proportional to the effort.
Misfortune
10x effort yields only a fraction of result, or no result at all.
Through astrology, we can understand which pattern our time follows in every situation of life.
Foundation of Astrology
In the world there are many routes to reach a destination. No matter which path or vehicle you take, you will arrive at your intended destination.
The foundation for all methods: Rashis, Nakshatras, Grahas, Graha Drishtis, and Dasha
Learning Paths in Astrology
There are many paths for predicting the future. To arrive at accurate predictions, one often needs to cross-verify using 2 or 3 different methods.
Astrology has been divided into three parts:
Siddhanta (Theory)
Planetary positions and related mathematical calculations.
Phalita (Predictive)
Revealing past, present, and future based on birth-time planetary positions.
Muhurta (Electional)
Knowing which period strengthens your intention a crore-fold.
Methods in Astrology
Parashari Astrology
The mother of all astrological systems. Contains methods to predict results based on planetary positions and determine timing through the Dasha system.
Jaimini Astrology
Sage Jaimini learned from Sage Parashara and developed his own style of determining astrological results.
Nadi Astrology
30 degrees further divided into 150, 300, or 600 parts for extremely minute-level analysis. (Bhrigu Nandi Nadi, Shiva Nadi, etc.)
Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP)
Primarily used for Prashna (horary) astrology — precise answers about a single important matter.
Western Astrology
Predicts based on angular distances between planets. Primarily assesses psychological and emotional states.
Palmistry (Hasta Samudrikam)
Predicting results based on hand lines. More limited scope for precise prediction compared to traditional astrology.
Conclusion
Learn one system well, then cross-verify with other methods to arrive at accurate results.
Example: Bangalore to Mumbai Comparing Methods
A person needs to travel from Bangalore to Mumbai:
- Traditional (Parashari): Tells whether the person will reach Mumbai or not.
- Western Astrology: Tells whether the person will travel with ease or face difficulties.
By combining both, we can determine whether the person will go and how the journey will unfold.
