Ramu's Doubt - Is Life a Calculation? Or Is It Random?
There was a simple young man named Ramu. He studied very hard, but could not land a job. At the same time, his friend Somu, who did not work as hard as Ramu, settled into a good company. "Why am I going through so many difficulties? Why is my hard work not bearing fruit?" - Ramu would always feel distressed. It was while searching for answers to such questions that Ramu came to know about Astrology (Jyotishyam).
What is Astrology?
In the Vedangas, Astrology has been compared to the "Eyes" — Sarvendriyanam Nayanam Pradhanam
Just as we accept what we see with our eyes as truth, through astrological knowledge we can understand our karma and the flow of time with equal clarity.
It is not merely the mathematics of stars. It is knowledge pertaining to time - what has happened, what is happening, and what is yet to happen (Trikala Jnanam). By knowing about time in advance, life becomes like a journey on a familiar path.
Benefits of Astrology in Life
Learning or understanding astrology should not create fear in us; it should only increase our awareness.
Optimal Use of Time
By knowing which kind of work is best suited for which period, we can avoid wasting time.
Advance Preparedness
When we know what is likely to happen in advance, we can be mentally prepared to face difficulties.
Personalized Guidance
Astrology provides specific advice tailored uniquely to each individual's situation.
Understanding Karmic Bonds
We can gain a thorough understanding of our karmic connections in matters such as marriage, career, health, and children.
Drawbacks of Astrology
Over-Dependence
Relying on astrology for every small matter can diminish one's self-effort (Swayam Krushi).
Mental Weakness
People who lack courage may fall prey to fear and anxiety when they learn about problems in advance.
Superstitions
In the name of astrology, some people follow blind rituals and fall victim to misconceptions.
Irresponsible Conduct
When astrologers speak without proper discernment about how much to reveal, it can adversely affect the lives of those who consult them.
Conclusion
After gaining astrological knowledge, we should stop being afraid of our problems. Instead, we should recognize them as the fruits of our karma, and develop the awareness to correct our future through virtuous deeds (Sat-Karmas).
Examples
In Class 1 ("Astrology Utility in Modern Life" and "Significance and Utility"), the Guru narrated several important stories and examples to explain the necessity of astrology and the influence of planets. Here they are:
The Compromised Marriage Real-Life Problems
To explain how a horoscope (Jatakam) can reveal real-life complexities and frustrations, a case was described. A man, upon learning that his love affair would not work out, married the daughter of his father's friend (of the same caste). However, after the marriage, problems arose - lack of understanding between husband and wife, difficulties even in small matters like breastfeeding the first child, and the inability to balance office and home pressures. Through this story, it was explained that a horoscope can identify such mental and situational conflicts.
The Car Repair Prediction Predicting Nature vs Numbers
An example was given to illustrate how astrology predicts the nature of an outcome rather than exact numbers. When someone asked, "Will the car repair cost 10,000 or 20,000?" the Guru, based on the time chart or horoscope, predicted that due to the influence of Saturn (Shani), the work would be delayed and would not get done at that place. Eventually, the car could not be repaired there and had to be towed to Bombay - meaning the problem was not about money, but about the work not getting done at all.
The Train Berth Example Prarabdha Karma
To explain the theory of Karma, a train journey was used as an analogy. Even though everyone pays the same ticket price, one person gets a comfortable "Side Lower" berth while another gets an inconvenient "Middle Berth." This analogy was used to help understand that this is not in our hands - it is what has been allotted to us, known as Prarabdha Karma (the portion of past karma that is destined to be experienced in this life).
