Planet Capacity — Calculation Documentation

Complete reference for every formula, scoring rule, and detection logic used in the Planet Capacity scoring system. This system evaluates a planet's ability to deliver results by combining Light, Performance, and Resource components.

Overview

Planet Capacity is a comprehensive scoring system that evaluates how effectively a planet can deliver results in a birth chart. The final score (0–100) is derived from three components:

Light acts as a scaling factor. A retrograde planet with Light = 30 only delivers 30% of its Performance and Resource potential. A planet with full Light (100) delivers its full score.

Light Score (RC 7-Rule System)

The Light Score is calculated using the Retrograde Circulation (RC) 7-Rule System from the Dynamic Natal Chart analysis. It determines whether a planet has clear "light" (directional energy) to deliver results, or whether retrograde motion disrupts its significations.

Performance Component (60 max)

The Performance score evaluates the planet's functional role, lordship quality, and positional strength. It is split across 3 columns with different weights, totalling a maximum of 60 marks.

Each column has two main components: a Position Score (based on house placement) and a Lordship Score (weighted average of multiple sub-factors).

Column Weight Distribution

Planet Column (20% = 12 marks max)

The Planet Column evaluates the planet itself — its house position and functional role for the given ascendant. This column carries the lowest weight (20%) because the planet's own placement is less important than what its star lord and powerful planet indicate.

Position Score (max 7.2 marks)

The Position Score is based on the planet's house placement strength. A planet in houses 1, 2, 10, 11 (Kendra/Upachaya) scores highest. The input value (0–100) is derived from the Bhava Score table.

Lordship Score (max 4.8 marks)

Calculated as a weighted average of 5 sub-factors:

Star Lord Column (50% = 30 marks max)

The Star Lord Column is the most important column, carrying 50% of the total Performance weight. In KP Astrology, the Star Lord (Nakshatra Lord) determines what results the planet will deliver. A planet acts as an agent of its star lord — so the star lord's house position and functional nature largely decide the planet's performance.

Position Score (max 18 marks)

Based on the star lord's house placement. Same Bhava Score logic as the Planet column, but scaled to 18 marks instead of 7.2.

Lordship Score (max 12 marks)

Same 5-factor weighted average as the Planet column, but scaled to 12 marks:

Powerful Planet Column (30% = 18 marks max)

The Powerful Planet Column evaluates the sub-lord (the planet that has the strongest influence over the star lord). This column uses a different lordship formula — instead of Lordship Association and Planet Association, it uses Retrograde Status (40% weight). This heavily penalizes retrograde planets in the Powerful column.

Each lordship sub-factor is scored on a 0–100 scale, then multiplied by its weight. Below is a detailed explanation of how each sub-factor is calculated:

1. Star Lord Comfort (10% weight)

Checks whether the planet's star lord (nakshatra lord) is a natural benefic or not. A benefic star lord provides a comfortable environment for the planet to deliver results.

2. Functional Benefic/Malefic (30% weight)

Evaluates whether the planet itself is functionally benefic or malefic for the given ascendant. This is the heaviest single sub-factor in the Planet/Star Lord columns.

3. Yoga Karaka (20% weight)

A Yoga Karaka planet owns both a Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) and a Trikona (1, 5, 9) house simultaneously, making it highly auspicious for the ascendant. Each ascendant has specific Yoga Karaka planets.

4. Lordship Association (20% weight) — Planet & Star Lord columns only

Evaluates the quality of houses lorded by associated planets. This is a manual assessment score (0–100) based on whether the connected house lords are favorable or unfavorable.

5. Planet Association (20% weight) — Planet & Star Lord columns only

Evaluates the quality of planets associated (conjunct or aspecting) with the subject planet. This is a manual assessment score (0–100) based on the nature of associated planets.

6. Retrograde Status (40% weight) — Powerful column only

Replaces Lordship Association and Planet Association in the Powerful column. A retrograde powerful planet is heavily penalized.

Ascendant Settings Table

The Functional Benefic/Malefic and Yoga Karaka sub-scores depend on the Ascendant (Lagna). Each ascendant has a predefined set of benefics, functional malefics, and yoga karakas:

Classification is based on Planetary Groups: the ascendant lord's group = Functional Benefic (FB), the other group = Functional Malefic (FM).

Jupiter Group: Su, Mo, Ma, Ju, Ke   |   Saturn Group: Me, Ve, Sa, Ra

The Position Score input for each column is derived from the planet's house placement. Use the Bhava Score table to determine the Position Score (0–100):

Example: Jupiter in a Cancer ascendant chart, placed in the 5th house. Star Lord = Saturn in 10th house. Powerful Planet = Mars (Direct) in 1st house.

Resource Component (40 max)

The Resource score evaluates the planet's dignity (special positions) and afflictions. Each column calculates a score from 0–100, then converts to marks using column-specific weights.

The 5-fold friendship (Pancha-Varga Maitri) determines whether a planet is in a friendly, neutral, or enemy sign. It combines permanent (natural) and temporary (positional) friendship into a final 5-fold result.

Dig Bala (directional strength) is determined by an 8-rule sub-system, not just simple house placement. A planet has Dig Bala if ANY of the 8 rules is satisfied.

Powerful Planet in Sign

The "Powerful Planet" (used in the Performance Component's Powerful Column) is determined for each zodiac sign using this priority-based rule chain. The first matching rule determines the powerful planet:

Gandantara Junctions

Gandantara occurs at the junction between water and fire signs, specifically at the boundaries of these nakshatras:

• Ketu-ruled nakshatras at Pada 1: Ashwini (Aries 0°), Magha (Leo 0°), Moola (Sagittarius 0°)
• Mercury-ruled nakshatras at Pada 4: Ashlesha (Cancer 26.67°–30°), Jyeshtha (Scorpio 26.67°–30°), Revati (Pisces 26.67°–30°)

Vargottama (D1 = D9)

A planet is Vargottama when its Rashi (D1) sign equals its Navamsha (D9) sign. This is a sign of strength — the planet's energy is consistent across both charts.
